London accredited planning students invited to apply for £2,000 RTPI scholarship

Undergraduate planning students on accredited courses across the capital have been invited to apply for the Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) new Michael Welbank Scholarship.

The RTPI is launching the Scholarship to commemorate the work of Michael Welbank MBE who served as RTPI President from 1992 to 1993. Mr Welbank, who died in September 2020, was awarded an MBE for services to local government and the north-west London community in the 2013 New Year honours list.

Students from London South Bank University, University College London and Westminster University are invited to apply for the £2,000 Scholarship, which aims to encourage diverse talent into the profession.

The RTPI is making one £2,000 Welbank Scholarship available at each London accredited Planning Schools each year over the next three years, at which point the programme will be reviewed. The Scholarship will be funded using a donation made by Michael Welbank’s family.

Applicants must have joined their university via a widening participation programme. These programmes aim to provide higher education opportunities to students from under-represented demographics, including lower-income households and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Eligible students should contact their university lecturer or tutor for further details of how to apply. Further details of application criteria can be found here.

Andrew Close, Director of Education and Profession at the RTPI, said: “The RTPI is excited to be launching the Michael Welbank Scholarship, and is very grateful to former RTPI President Welbank and his family for their generous support.

“The Scholarship has a powerful role to play in encouraging diverse talent to join the planning profession.

“Developing planning professionals from a range of backgrounds is vital in designing the communities of the future.”
