The winners of the RTPI South East Awards for Planning Excellence 2018 were announced on 22nd November 2018 at the historic Brighton Pavilion.
The overall winner was:
Bird Aware Solent
The Bird Aware Solent project sought to provide special protection for overwintering birds on the Solent coastline, following concerns by natural environment and bird experts about human disturbance to the wildlife, and the negative effects of further planned housing.
Led by a strategic partnership of 14 LPAs, four nature conservation bodies and a County Council, now known as Bird Aware Solent, the project delivered a comprehensive long-term strategy. This has resulted in the protection of overwintering birds, whilst allowing continued residential development and open access to the coastline for visitors. The Partnership - with the full backing of Natural England - is now promoting the 'Bird Aware approach' to other partnerships seeking special protection for wildlife.
